Betting Strategy

Any blackjack player needs to have a betting strategy on hand when playing. It is the other component to your blackjack strategy. The reason you want to have a betting strategy is that, while blackjack is for entertainment, you also want to make money. A betting strategy helps to control your betting, and therefore how much you lose. There are a couple basic blackjack betting strategies that are good places to start.

First we will look at the Martingale method. This method was designed around the principle of beating a losing streak. The way this betting strategy works is that for every hand that you lose you double your bet from the round you just lost. For example, you just lost $10 in a round so you would bet $20 on the next round; if you lose your $20, then in the next round you would bet $40, and so on until you win a round. Once you win, you would return your bet the starting amount at the beginning of the next round.  The only potential issue with this betting strategy is that you need a fair-sized to large bankroll to pull it off. Using that same $10 example, let’s say that you lost nine hands in a row. On the tenth hand you would have to wager $5120.

For a much less riskier betting strategy, there is the Paroli method. This method is designed to get the most out of a winning streak. In the Paroli method, you double you bet only when you win, only returning to your original betting amount when you lose a hand. Using the same $10 blackjack table, let’s say that you win the first round, you would bet $20 the next round; if you won the second round, you would bet $40 on the third. Using this method you can build your winnings, and turn around to use them to further increase your winnings. Using this method, the player has the potential to make quite the winnings. However, using this method also has the potential to lose quite a bit too. Going back to the $10 table example, let’s say that you have just won the previous nine hands in a row; for the tenth hand you would be betting the same $5120. But if you lose that tenth round, you have also lost the money you have made.  So the Paroli method is not entirely risk-free.

Comparing only these two blackjack betting strategies, and there are more out there, both have the potential for loss. With the Martingale betting strategy requires a larger bank roll to start with, it is still easy to lose it all in a player having to double their bet for every lose—what is it to say that you will lose until you have no money left. And while the Paroli method does not require a large bankroll to begin with, any money you make can be lost in one hand since you are doubling your bet with every win. The key is in knowing when to step away from the game.

Before taking a new blackjack betting strategy to a real game, try it out in a free-play mode. And do not try it only once. Play several rounds with a new betting strategy to see how you feel when you have to place larger and larger bets. Never go into a blackjack game with a betting strategy you have not tried out ahead of time. Playing in a real money game is not the time to find out that you are not comfortable with your betting strategy. You want to be completely confident in how you play, and that includes your blackjack betting strategy.
